Just Call Me Juice: Dark Days in The Bronx

I’m a sucker for war comics, and given the natural liberalism of contemporary comic creators, I’m intrigued to see how this “horror story on the horrors of war” approaches the ever-relevant question of Vietnam.Battler Britton #4 (Wildstorm), because it’s a Garth Ennis war comic with perfect art by Colin Wilson who never messes up the details on the warbirds.Rocketo #12 (Image), a title that always looked fascinating, but I never gave it a shot … seems I stumbled in on its last issue, though.***Notably back in my lineup is Nightwing. Five dollars for a unique 34-page original story is iffy under any circumstances, and the short shrift on the scripted dialogue suggested it would be a story I’d breeze through far too quickly.

By: The List AdministratorIf you're a Yankee fan, you're probably miserable today. You're miserable, but you saw this coming. And why shouldn't you have, its happened pretty much the same way for the last 5 years. And now its come to pass that Joe Torre has likely been fired by Yankees management. And the thing that makes you feel terrible is that it had to happen. You really like Joe; he's a great man and was the perfect manager for the great Yankee dynasty of the late 90's.But since 2000, he's made some inexcusable blunders.Surely I'll give him a pass for pulling the infield in in the 9th inning of game 7 of the World Series in 2001.But I cant excuse pitching Jeff Weaver in extra innings against the Marlins in the 2003 World Series. And I can't excuse starting Kevin Brown against the Sox in the '04 ALCS and relieving him with Javier Vasquez. And I cant excuse leaving Wang in New York while facing elimination in Detroit, or playing Sheffield at first or not DHing Matsui and letting Melky play left. The fact is Torre has made mistakes. But in my critique of Torre, let it also be known that the ouster of the stoic manager will NOT cure what ails the Yankees come playoff time. The Yankees' illness is twofold, its symptoms are both structural and mental, and niether have anything to do with the team's coaching. The strutural problems it does not take a genius to diagnose: aging, mediocre starting ptiching; putrid middle releif; subpar defense; and a lineup stacked full of home run hitters instead of situational, fundamental hitters that know how to manufacture runs against great pitching. In essence, since 2001 the Yankees have morphed into a more expensive version of the Texas Rangers. But the mental problem very few seem to understand. From talk radio to the newspapers to the guy on the street, pundits think what this Yankee team needs is 'a kick in the pants' from a firey new manager. Most think the team lacks 'heart', and they think Torre has failed to give it to them. This is simply not the case.To highlight the real issue, one need only watch the Mets and see how excited Jose Reyes gets when he gets a hit, or how David Wright gets pumped up for each and every at bat. Reyes and Wright do not have more 'heart' than Alex Rodriguez or Derek Jeter, they have more virility and agression. The Mets are hungry. They come up to bat with an agressive mindset. They think about how they can rip the pitcher, and how they can cause trouble on the basepaths, and how they can score runs. Their thoughts are positive; they dont think about failure. They play to win and to have fun doing it.And that, in essence, is the prime ailment of the Yankees. The Yankees play a paranoid game, with the spectre of failure hanging over each player's shoulder. This is because the Yankees have created an atmosphere where failure is not acceptable and where there is no room for error. Astoundingly, they see this as something that is good and is to be emulated and taught to their whole system. But it is this attitude that has destroyed this team.Everyone fails sometimes. Failure is a part of life. Its how you deal with the prospect of failure that makes you a winner, because even winners fail sometimes. Look at any billionaire; they made their money by disregarding fear and faliure and taking agressive steps towards what they wanted, no matter how outlandish it seemed at the time. Conversely, no billionaire starts out by saying to themsleves I have to become a billionaire or else my entire life is a complete waste. If the Mets go out there and lose in the NLCS, some will be disappointed and some will criticize them. But no one expects the Mets to win every World Series and that is not the Mets' goal. Although its a bit hokey, the Mets thought winning the NL East a big enough accomplishment that they sprayed it on their field behind home plate. And good for them.Because the Mets organziation realizes that you don't win every year and you can't win every year, so they are happy with what they have and they choose to celebrate what they have. And now they're hungry for more. All one needs to do is to listen to Derek Jeter's If you dont win it all then the season aint nothin" speech to pinpoint the cancer that eats away at a Yankees team that really should have beaten Detroit easily. The Yankees play not to lose. They are under so much pressure that they choke up, panic, and become discouraged very easily. Their motivation is fear, not hunger.Well, fear never makes you win. Fear motivates fellings of self preservation and regression rather than virile agression. Was it lack of heart that induced the normally patient Yankees to hack at the first pitch every at bat in the last two games of the Detroit series? Was it lack of heart that caused A-Rods throwing errors, or Mike Mussina to leave a few pitches too far over the plate? The reason the Yankees have not executed properly in the last few playoffs is because fear of failure has taken away thier killer instinct. It has paralyzed them. It has gotten into their heads, and wreaked havoc with thier abaility to do the things they commonly do during the regular season.Consequently, the only answer to the Yankees paradox is to reduce the pressure on the team. Make it so that failure is not even thought about by Yankee players. The only way to reduce the pressure on the team is to destroy the not winning the World Series is a failed season cuture that has smothered it, and to reduce the payroll so that the rest of the league doesnt always expect the Yankees to win. This might entail not making the playoffs for a few years, but if that means some of the fans will go away, than so be it because there are too many bandwagon Fankee fans to begin with (Fankee= Fake Yankee).Get rid of Sheffield, get rid of Mussina, get rid of Johnson, get rid of A Rod, and bring up some kids. Lose for a few years if you have to. Learn what its like to be hungry and fearless again.Hungry and fearless like the 96 Yankees, who no one expected anything of.Hungry and fearless like this years Mets, Tigers, or Athletics, who no one expects anything of and each win is a blessing to be celebrated, even if they dont win it all.And the real person that needs to retire is George Steinbrenner, who has created the inhuman pressure cooker that is the New York Yankees and endowed it with an unnatural and impossible all-or-nothing attitude.

Small area estimation

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jump to: navigation, search
Small area estimation is any of several statistical techniques involving the estimation of parameters for small sub-populations, generally used when the sub-population of interest is included in a larger survey. The final model resulting from this for unit/farm 'j' in country 'i' is , where 'y' denotes the reported crop area, is the regression coefficient, 'x' is the farm-level estimate for either corn or soybean usage from the satellite data and represents the county-level effect of any area characteristics that haven't been accounted for.
Besides the collapse to Boston in 2004, where I actually didn't leave my room for 1 full day, this has been the hardest Yankees loss I've been apart of. This was hard because it was so unexpected (after Game 1, I was telling my dad how this is the most relaxed I've ever been for a Yanks playoff series), and because of the expectations of this Yankees team. It might be time for Torre to go - It's been 10 great years under Torre, but I think it is time for a change. His passive attitude works in during the regular season for a team full of superstars and worked well in 96-00 with players who had the passion to win (O'Neill, Wells, younger Bernie, Cone...) but it just seems like the players tune him out come postseason time.
